Photograp of Trocadero Palace, Paris, France, prior to 1900

rose @ January 6, 2009

  • I have a photograph taken of the Le Palais du Trocadero et le Pont d'Iena in Paris prior to 1900. The title is in both French and English, with 'A.P.' beside it, in the upper right hand corner. It's size is 11" x 4.5" (28 cm x 11 cm). It contains horse drawn carriages, a few old cars, the statues of horses flanking the beginning of the bridge. Few people about. I have been told that the Palace does not excist any more.

  • Well, since original photographs are not visibly labelled with descriptions of what is decpicted (this is only done with postcards and the like), I would say that your image is not an original photograph, but a vintage picture postcard or a souvenir photograph. Of course, it is hard to say anything about the item's age without examining the photograph itself; it could be a quite recent reproduction. A professional photographer could have a look at it and easily say whether the material is 100 years old or not. Postcards did not yet have standardized sizes around 1900, so the unusual "panoramic" dimensions do not necessarily mean that it has not been sold as a picture postcard. The unusual size might make this photograph interesting for some collectors of vintage postcards, but I don't feel competent enought to estimate how much a collector would be willing to pay (provided it is an historic item, not a more recent reproduction). Maybe one of my colleagues with insight in this collectors' market will be able to provide an answer. Best regards, Scriptor

  • Hi scriptor. The picture supplied is almost identical to the one you I have. Right on!!!! I was told by a Parisian that the picture would have some value since it is a photograph and not a copy. I do know that it was built for a Paris exhibition. Why it was considered ugly, I can't imagine. But then again I have only the one view. Thanks. K.

  • Hi scriptor. (that sounds like I'm dealing with a StarTrekker!) Anyway. Please research the market for such a picture, if any. I love the photo that I have. It is promanetly (?) placed over the throne in our bathroom. Need I tell you that the Parisian was male? The size you showed in your email is quite different than the size I have. Does this help? xx K.

  • Dear kajsa, That sounds highly interesting. What exactly do you want me to research? Greetings, Scriptor

  • Dear kajsa, I assume that this is the photograph you are referring to: http://lefildutemps.free.fr/paris/cartes_postales/cartes_martine/55_trocadero.jpg Do you desire background information on the Palais du Trocadero and its history? Or is it anything else you want? Please let me know, so I can try to create an answer that meets your needs. Looking forward to your response, Scriptor

  • Hi scriptor. I've checked the glass covering the photograph (print?) and it seems to be a recent glass. I have photo's taken around that time, with original glass, ie a print of Queen Victoria's Jubilee. The glass there is distorted, showing that the glass has 'flowed', since the print was framed. Thank you very much for your info, though, and a happy new year. xx K.
